As a kid no doubt you learned the story about the Wizard of Oz. Have you ever thought about what this story has to do with beliefs?

Once a tornado blew a girl named Dorothy from her home in Kansas into the strange new land of Oz. Lost, all she wanted was a way to get home. Lacking a roadmap or directions, she relied on the advice of a Good Witch, who advised her to follow the yellow brick road to the Wizard of Oz, who maybe could help get back home because he was powerful.
On her way to meet the Wizard, Dorothy met a scarecrow, who joined her out of the hope that the Wizard could give him some brains.
Then they both met a tin man. He wanted a heart because a wicked witch had put him under a spell and removed his heart.
By now, Dorothy and the scarecrow are such true believers in the power of the Wizard of Oz, that they easily convince Tin-man to join them.
Lastly they met a lion who was afraid of everything and everybody. He joined the journey, hoping the Wizard will give him courage enough to truly be King of the Beasts.
As in any good story, there are problems along the way. First, there's the guard who tells them that if they have come for a stupid reason, The Wizard might get angry and destroy them all, because this was the belief that the Wizard of Oz projected. The Wizard said they couldn’t get what they wanted until they killed the Wicked Witch and brought him proof. In spite of vast odds and lots of trickery on the Wicked Witch’s part, they prevailed. In the end, the Wizard is revealed as a fake, but he can do two important things, which is to acknowledge that the scarecrow, tin man and lion already have the very qualities they sought, like courage, brains, and a heart. Also, being a Kansas man himself with a handy hot air balloon, he can return Dorothy to Kansas.
The story is a brilliant portrayal of how easily our beliefs can trip us up.
• How often are you like the Good Witch, who makes pronouncements based on nothing more than hearsay?
• How often are you like Dorothy, who is so quick to believe the pronouncements of others?
• How often are you like Dorothy's traveling companions, who look outside themselves for the powers they already have?
The story also shows how basic is the human drive to better ourselves. Often, the main characters reinforced their belief that they could get what they wanted. For example, remember the tin-man saying he could hear that heart he had not yet found beating in his body?

• How often do you find just the right allies because you are so engaged in your journey of change that they want to come along, too?

To develop the deep-down kind of self-confidence that leads to victory, you need positive knowing, not just positive thinking. Because you will always act in a manner consistent with your beliefs. It is essential you regulate your beliefs to gauge where you are and where you are going in life.

I first became acquainted with self improvement principles when a friend downloaded over 40 self improvement audio books on my laptop. This was back in 2005. Since then I have spent countless of time digesting self improvement principles. What you are reading here is a result of my internal change.

Your beliefs are the cement that holds your entire personality together. Beliefs can create or destroy possibilities in your life. In life you don’t get what you want. You get who you are. Who you are is what you believe!
I enjoy watching Discovery Channel and National Geographic Channel. I am very intrigued about learning people’s culture. At times, what I see seems so outrageous and sometimes even stupid. But I can’t really knock other people’s way of life, because that is the way the things are for them. That is all they know. Their faith, beliefs, tradition, culture and religion have an influence on what they do and how they live.
Here is a recap of some beliefs I have seen on the show called “Taboo.” Somewhere in Africa girls proudly undergo a painful three-hour tattooing ritual, believing this will turn them into a beautiful woman who is now ready for marriage. The tattoo covers the girl's entire face. On her temple is put an image of an eye, “so that she can keep watch of her husband even if he is behind her.” On her forehead, an image of a hair pick symbolizes beauty and is believed to let her look directly at husband. The letter “X” symbolizes union with her future husband and images of cow tracks are also added to her cheeks.
In Thailand, women of the Kayan people stretch their necks with brass coils, believing this makes them more beautiful. Traditionally they will only take the rings off during childbirth or if they commit adultery. To see what the people look like with neck rings on, Google “Neck Rings.”
In Arizona, patients of an alternative healer believe that if you drink your own urine, it will heal you. He says, “Drinking your own urine boosts your immune system…it cures sore throats, colds, and flu.” He also stated that he starts each day with a glass of fresh urine.”

One 5,000-year-old Chinese medicine belief is that eating "penis meat” will increase sexual performance. Here is a direct quote from the clip of the show, “The Chinese have an old saying that whatever part of the animal you eat, the same part of your body will make you stronger. So the penis meat will make you stronger in sex.” The famous dish, “Penis Hot Pot,” features the testicles of 6 different animals. A dish of seal penis costs $500.
For me, born and raised in Oakland, California, these beliefs seem way out, compared to my beliefs which don't let me see myself doing that. But if I was born and raised in China, my outlook would be different. I would think eating penis meat is normal and healthy because of my environment. I simply would not know anything different.
Ironically, my favorite food is Chinese. But I'll skip the penis meat.
Beliefs don’t come out of nowhere. They are an accumulation of thoughts we tell ourselves and hear from others. Over time, we started to believe what we were told about the same thing over and over, about what we could and couldn’t do. In time we became what we mostly believed about ourselves.
Your mind will do what you and others tell it to do. What ever the can’t is you believe to be true, your brain, will give you get what you believe. If you have believed that you can not stick to a diet, your mind will figure out a way that no diet will work for you. If you don’t think you deserve this or that, you will unconscientiously push away possibilities that can prove you wrong.
If you believe that you are _______(you fill in the blank), you will behave like the beliefs you hold in your mind. You will look for reasons to support that belief. Your outcome and results follow from what you believe. If you don’t think you can, your subconscious will perform duties to prove you are correct.

As you know,computers are programmed to follow certain commands. When your computer is not following your commands, it may have a virus or your software may be outdated. When you’re not getting what you want in life, it’s time to search for the thoughts, beliefs and actions that sabotage your best interests and to install updated, more productive beliefs. Your brain is really much like a computer. Every message you say to yourself, every message you see and hear, has and will continue to get typed into your brain to be stored. Like a computer, your brain only does what you tell it to do. When conflicting thoughts come through, your brain chooses the thought you most believe. Therefore, even if you say you are motivated to become a success at work, but you believe you cannot be successful, the “I can’t be successful” belief will become your default setting. It’s as if you have (usually unconsciously) programmed your brain to take losing actions, however loudly you pronounce to yourself and others all your success dreams. In your brain, what you say to yourself, or self-talk, is like your operating software. Self-talk can be conscious or unconscious, spoken aloud or silent. Either way, it is very powerful. Self-talk is like having a song burned into your mind. When you are unconscious about different events that occur in life, it’s as if you automatically hit the “play button” for thoughts and beliefs that are already stored. Negative self-talk reinforces negative beliefs and leads to negative actions. Positive self-talk reinforces positive beliefs and leads to positive actions. That means that a belief does not need to be true to be a belief. All you need to do is believe it and you will make it true to you! That means that once you have a deeply entrenched belief, that belief along with self-talk can motivate you to overcome extreme obstacles.
If you’re not getting the life you truly want and deserve, there’s a big chance that you’re punching the wrong brain buttons. Maybe you’ve failed to install and develop buttons that run the apps that will get you what you really want. You may not even know that there is a formula to pushing the right buttons, or that you’re punching the wrong buttons. Turning off the wrong buttons, installing the right ones, and running them wisely all fall under the general umbrella of self-improvement. Self improvement covers everything that's really important in life, from relationships with your spouse, family, and friends; to increasing your net worth, to managing bad personal traits, improving your spirituality, to living a healthy life.
Don’t blame. Don’t complain.
A woman was walking past a house and saw an elderly man sitting on a porch. Near him, a dog was moaning as if it was in pain. The next day, she walked past the house again. She saw the same elderly man, same dog making the same pained sound. On the third day, she saw the same scene and she just couldn’t stand it any more. “Excuse me,” she asked the man, “Why does the dog keep moaning as if he is in great pain?” “Oh, him, he is lying on a nail,” said the man. Confused, the woman asked, “If he is lying on a nail and it hurts, why doesn’t he just get up?” The little old man smiled and said sweetly, “Well. honey, it hurts just enough for him to moan about it, but not enough for him to move yet.” However far-fetched this story sounds, I bet you know plenty of people who spend a lot of time complaining about something but do nothing to change the situation.
Albert Einstein, the scientist who is often considered one of the smartest people who has ever lived (if not the smartest), often said that you just can't fix a problem with the same kind of thinking that created the problem. Great self-improvers use complaints as 1) wakeup calls that they want something better, then 2) catalysts to doing something better. Self Improvement guru Brian Tracy says, “To achieve something you have never achieved before, you will have to become a person you have never been before.” That means when great self-improvers face any challenge, they typically meet it by pushing the buttons that direct their brain to “look clearly at this problem. See what I can learn from it, how I can make it better.” More importantly, great self-improvers don’t get stuck on the “complain perpetually” button. They maybe even have removed all traces of that kind of app, the way a computer removes a virus.
It’s really amazing how many people waste time and energy being stuck on complaining perpetually. If you ask them, most people would agree that nothing I can do will make it rain or not rain, be windy or calm, warmer or cooler. While they accept that reality, they won't accept the fact that there are other things in life that they can't control. Some people I know complain about how broke they are. They don’t have the right thinking ability and/or they lack actions needed to change their situation. Instead, they make excuses, as if they were stuck on the complaint button, so they don’t know which more effective buttons to the brain to push. An insane person is someone that does the same thing over and over, but expects different results. That’s the kind of person Einstein was talking about. Many people who complain about not having enough money actually spend a lot of time doing things like continuously watching TV, movies, playing video games and meaningless hours on the Internet.

There was a book I once read called “Influence- The Psychology of Persuasion.” The book was written by Robert Cialdini PH.D. The book has 4.5 stars on amazon and has over 950 reviews. So this book is a pivotal read.

“When people place bets at the horse race track, they are more confident after placing the bet as they were before placing the bet. Of course nothing has changed with the horse or the track. There is something that has changed with the person's mind however...Our nearly obsessive desire to be (and to appear) consistent with what we have already done. once we have made a choice or taken a stand, we will encounter personal and interpersonal pressures to behave consistently with that commitment.
